Πέντε σκέψεις για την τεχνολογία και τα παιδιά

Όταν κάνεις παιδιά αρχίζεις και παρατηρείς διάφορες συζητήσεις για τις οποίες είχες μηδέν ενδιαφέρον πριν. Μία από αυτές που μου κάνει φοβερή εντύπωση είναι η τεχνολογία και τα παιδιά. Ειδικά σε θέματα όπως πώς να τους μάθεις όταν δεν ξέρεις, πώς να τα προστατεύσεις, πώς να τα βοηθήσεις να έχουν κριτική σκέψη, να μάθουν, να ψάξουν σε θέματα τεχνολογίας. Πράγματα όπως προσωπικός υπολογιστής, έρευνα online, ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια, τί πιστεύουμε και τί όχι κλπ.

Ο καθένας μεγαλώνει τα παιδιά του όπως θέλει κι αν δε θέλετε να ξέρουν ότι ζούμε στον αιώνα των υπολογιστών και της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης φυσικά δικαίωμα σας κλπ κλπ. Εδώ μιλάω από προσωπικής άποψης και οι επιλογές σας είναι δικές σας. Πάμε τώρα στο παρασύνθημα.

  1. Συχνά ακούω τη γνωστή παπάτζα – “εμείς δεν τα είχαμε αυτά μικροί δεν πάθαμε τίποτα”. Άλφον, τα είχαμε (στη γενιά μου) αλλά επειδή στην Ελλάδα είμασταν πίσω ήταν δύσκολο να τα δούμε. Δεύτερον, εντάξει κι ο παππούς μου δεν είχε χαρτί υγείας μεγαλώνοντας και δεν έπαθε τίποτα ο κώλος του αλλά δεν είδα κανένα σας να σκουπίζει τον πωπό του με εφημερίδες ή φύλλα από το φίκο στο σαλόνι.
  2. Η άλλη παπάτζα – δυστυχώς υποστηριζόμενη και από ανθρώπους τεχνικά γνώστες – ότι οι κόρες τους “ενδιαφέρονται” για κούκλες μόνο ενώ οι γιοί τους είναι γκατζετάκηδες από κούνια. Άμα είσαι εσύ πεπεισμένος (σεξιστή) πείθεις και το παιδί σου.
  3. Η τρίτη παπάτζα  είναι ότι ένα παιδί πρέπει να έχει έφεση στις θετικές επιστήμες ή στα μαθηματικά για να καταλάβει την τεχνολογία. Αυτά είναι απαρχαιωμένα – αν ίσχυαν ποτέ – και το ότι διατηρείται αυτό το στερεότυπο είναι και αυτοεκπληρούμενη προφητεία.
  4. Η τέταρτη παπάτζα (και η πιο επικίνδυνη) είναι ότι εφόσον ο γονιός δεν ξέρει δεν μπορεί και να βοηθήσει ή να ελέγξει. Ο γονιός μπορεί και να μάθει και να βρει ανθρώπους που ξέρουν.

Ας πούμε μια ωραία ιστορία λοιπόν σήμερα, το πώς ένας άνθρωπος εντελώς Ατάλαντος με Α κεφαλαίο στα μαθηματικά και τις θετικές επιστήμες (εγώ), από γονείς που δεν είχαν ιδέα, σε ένα σπίτι άσχετο με υπολογιστές μεγάλωσε και δουλεύει στο χώρο, έχει άποψη και είναι και ολίγον από nerdουλας. Και γυναίκα.

Οι γονείς μου δεν δουλεύουν στο χώρο. Κανένας στο σπίτι μας δεν ήταν χομπίστας της ηλεκτρονικής τεχνολογίας αν και ο μπαμπάς μου ως μηχανικός πλοίων ήταν πάντα και γνώστης και θαυμαστής της τεχνολογίας. Ιδού βασικά παραδείγματα του πώς αυτοί οι δύο άνθρωποι (και κάποιοι ακόμα) έβαλαν το χεράκι τους.

  1. Περίπου το 1990, όταν ήμουν 10 ετών, ο μπαμπάς μου άκουσε ότι οι υπολογιστές είναι το μέλλον και έφερε στο σπίτι το περιοδικό PIXEL – το οποίο εγώ διάβασα ΡΙΞΕΛ. Υπολογιστή δεν είχαμε αλλά κάθησε μαζί μου να το ξεφυλλίσουμε, να ανταλλάξουμε τις απορίες μας, να κοιτάξουμε τις φωτογραφίες.
  2. Περίπου το 1991 ή μπορεί και 1992, η μαμά Δέσποινα, θέλοντας να ξαναμπεί στην αγορά εργασίας έκανε σεμινάρια υπολογιστών και με έπαιρνε μαζί της. Έχω γράψει απλή BASIC κι έχω χρησιμοποιήσις και 5.25 ιντσών δισκέτα – floppy disk όνομα και πράμα – θα σέβεστε. Δε με ειδοποίησε κανείς ότι αυτά δεν ήταν για τα παιδιά ή ότι δεν ήταν για τα κορίτσια.
  3. Κάπου εκείνη την εποχή, οικογενειακός φίλος μας δάνεισε ένα Amiga το οποίο θυμάμαι και κλαίω από τη συγκίνηση. Μου έδειξε πώς να το χρησιμοποιώ μόνη μου, έκανα ερωτήσεις, έπαιζα και εκείνο το θρυλικό σκάκι. Και πάλι, δε μου είπε κάποιος ότι δεν κάνουν αυτά για τα κορίτσια που δεν τους αρέσουν τα μαθηματικά.
  4. Όταν ξεκίνησα το Λύκειο η μαμά Δέσποινα με κάθησε κάτω και μου πρότεινε να μάθω πέντε βασικά πράγματα από υπολογιστές γιατί διάβασε, άκουσε, κατάλαβε ότι καμία δουλειά δεν θα γίνεται στο μέλλον χωρίς υπολογιστές. Πήγαινα λοιπόν για δύο χρόνια τα Σάββατα κι έκανα μάθημα, απλά βασικά πράγματα. Βγήκα στην αγορά εργασίας το 1998 και ήταν τρομακτικό το πόσος κόσμος ακόμα δεν ήξερε να χρησιμοποιεί υπολογιστές.
  5. Επιτέλους περίπου το 1996 ή 1997 μου πήρανε υπολογιστή ΚΙ ΕΙΧΑ ΚΑΙ DIAL-UP ΣΥΝΔΕΣΗ ΣΤΟ ΙΝΤΕΡΝΕΤ – ποιος με έπιανε. Και παρόλο που ο πατέρας μου κόντεψε να το πετάξει από το μπαλκόνι λόγω χρεώσεων που ήταν εξωφρετνικές τότε, καταλάβαινε και τη χρησιμότητα του έστω από το βασικό, ότι έκανα έρευνα online πια για τις εργασίες μου και τις παρέδιδα τυπωμένες με τα ωραία τα εξωφυλλάκια.
  6. Ανακάλυψα έναν ολόκληρο θαυμαστό γενναίο κόσμο (γεια σου mIRC) και εκείνες τις εποχές οι άνθρωποι που ήταν online ήταν γνώστες και πολύ πρόθυμοι να βοηθήσουν τα ψάρια. Η ομάδα της ΕΕΕΑ, τα παιδιά του HELLUG, ο Παναγιώτης Βρυώνης,  o Περικλής Βανικιώτης (που λείπει και είναι loss γιατί ήταν τέτοιοιος τύπος), ο Γρηγόρης Μηλιαρέσης, ο εκπληκτικός τύπος με το κατάστημα ηλεκτρονικών παιχνιδιών στη Στουρνάρη που μου έδωσε το Discworld Noir και θα τον ευγνωμονώ για πάντα και όλοι όσοι πέτυχα και μου είπαν δυο κουβέντες. Δε μου είπε κάποιος από αυτούς “τί τα θες αυτά κορίτσι πράμα” ούτε θεώρησαν ότι δε μπορώ να καταλάβω την ηθική του ανοιχτού λογισμικού επειδή δε μπορούσα να γράψω κώδικα.

Ξέραν οι γονείς μου ότι αυτά τα μικρά πράγματα που έκαναν και η ενθάρρυνση τους θα με έφερνε στη δουλειά που με έφερε ή στις γνώσεις που έχω; Όχι, προφανώς δεν βλέπανε τόσο μακριά. Ήξεραν όμως πως ο,τι μπορούσαν να κάνουν για να με βοηθήσουν να έχω περισσότερα “προσόντα” – αυτό το βραχνά της κάθε εργατικής οικογένειας – μάλλον θα έκανε καλό. Όποιος δεν έχει βύσμα κυνηγάει τα προσόντα στην Ελλάδα και πάλι δε φτάνουν. Από εκεί ξεκινήσαμε μάλλον αλλά τελικά πήγαμε αλλού.

Μέσα από όλα αυτά ξεστραβώθηκα γιατί υπήρχαν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι και γιατί διάβασα κι εγώ και διαβάζω και μπορώ να καταλάβω πέντε βασικά πράγματα από κώδικα πλέον και πολιτική τεχνολογίας και ηθική. Δουλεύω στο χώρο, σπούδασα σχετικά πράγματα, έκανα έρευνα, δημιούργησα χαζά χαζά πέντε πράγματα online που και με διασκέδασαν και έμαθα από αυτά και μου δώσανε και κάποιες δουλειές. Και κυρίως, αισθάνομαι ότι ελέγχω την τεχνολογία και γνωρίζω πέντε πράγματα. Δεν είμαι τυφλή στην επίρρεια και τους κινδύνους της. Όταν νέα παιδιά γύρω μου δεν έχουν ιδέα από υπολογιστή, δεν διαβάζουν τίποτα περί τεχνολογίας, δεν τους ενδιαφέρει και ούτε καν τους περνάει από το μυαλό ότι “αυτά τα πράγματα” επηρεάζουν κάθε πλευρά της ζωής μας πλέον, τρομάζω.

Γιατί είναι σημαντικό τα παιδιά μας να “ξέρουν από αυτά”; Γιατί δεν θα υπάρχουν πλέον δουλειές που να μην έχουν έστω κάποια χαρακτηριστικά τεχνολογίας. Γιατί ο κλάδος έχει και λεφτά και δουλειά και αρκετή ηθική ευχαρίστηση (και ανάγκες). Γιατί τα παιδιά μας θα είναι πολίτες και ευθύνη μας είναι να μπορούν να κρίνουν και να μη χάφτουν τις μαλακίες που τους πασάρουν online. Γιατί ό,τι και να κάνετε θα έχει ο φίλος τους tablet και θα δουν όσα δεν θέλετε. Γιατί οι nerds νίκησαν και το στερεότυπο σας περί σπυριάρηδων τύπων κλεισμένων σε ένα υπόγειο είναι γελοίο. Τούτοι μας δίνουν ψωμάκι, τούτοι κανονίζουν τη διασκέδαση μας, τούτοι επηρεάζουν τη σκέψη μας. Τα παιδιά μας δεν αρκεί να γίνουν καταναλωτές. Εγώ θα ήθελα να γίνουν δημιουργοί.

  2. ελα και με τσίγκλισες πάλι! αυτο που ξερω ειναι οτι ο μικρος ανθρωπος που τον λεμε παιδι-παιδακι ρουφάει σαν σφουγγαρι (στυπόχαρτο λεγαν παλια, αλλα αυτό δεν ειναι κατανοητο σημερα!) μέσα στα 5 πρώτα χρονια της ζωης του, οπότε χρειαζεται πληροφοριες. Οσο περισσοτερες, τοσο το καλυτερο. Στα παιδια και στ’ ανηψια μου εδινα ερεθισματα, ανεξαρτήτως φυλου: ράψιμο, γραφομηχανη, κολυμπι, μαγειρικη, παιχνιδια και ζωγραφικες στο πισι (την εποχη που νεοτεροι ανθρωποι απο μενα το απέφευγαν μετα βδελυγμιας και ΗΜΑΡΤΟΝ λεμε) και η πλάκα ειναι οτι το αγορι λάτρευε να ράβει κουμπιά, ενω το ενα απο τα κοριτσια απο την κουζινα δεν πέρναγε ούτε απέξω! Κλίσεις και χαρισματα αποκαλυπτονται με αυτον τον τροπο και αλίμονο αν αποκλείονται καποιοι απο αυτους για λογους… “παράδοσης” και “επειδη εμείς ετσι καναμε”. Ημουν παντως τυχερη γιατι ειχα εναν σπουδαιο πατερα που σεβοταν απολυτως την ελευθερια των επιλογων μου, παιζει σημαντικο ρολο η σταση των γονιων επειδη αυτους εχει ως προτυπα το παιδι-παιδακι. Εννοείται ότι δεν ανησυχω καθολου για σενα μαμαΣοφία, για τους αλλους τα γραφω προς επίρρωσιν των δικών σου 🙂 <3
